Every November, British citizens, including the Queen, wear crimson poppies to commemorate those killed in battle. As a century-old tradition, this flower has now become a symbol of hope and gratitude. But how does its meaning come from?
The story goes like this: thousands of bright red flowers mysteriously appeared after a particularly bloody battle in Flanders, Belgium, during World War I. Canadian Expeditionary Force Lieutenant John McCrae, who had just lost a friend in the war, was so moved by the spontaneous flowers that he wrote a poem about the elasticity of flowers called "(In Flanders Fields) in the Battlefield of Flanders".
The 1915 poem was immediately popular and inspired the Royal Legion, a British charity that still supports veterans and their families, to sell 9 million artisanal poppies on November 11th. As a result, the Poppy Badge and the first poppy fundraising campaign began: a fund-raising event for veterans held every November to commemorate Memorial Day.
